Disclaimer: This post was drafted during the month of Ramadan. I chose not to release it then as I was concentrating on my daily Ramadan threads. It was originally titled ‘Challenging Islam’ and was NOT written as a result of a recent discussion on another blog.

From Abdullaah Ibn al-Mubaarak who said: “It was said to Hamdoon bin Ahmad: ‘Why is it that the speech of the Salaf was more beneficial than ours?’  He said, ‘Because they spoke for the honor of Islaam, and for the deliverance of their own souls, and for the pleasure of ar-Rahman, and we speak for the honor of our souls, for seeking the world, and for the pleasure of the creation.“

This made me think of what I refer to as, ‘disgruntled Muslims’. These type of Muslims thrive on controversy. They get off on challenging Islam and pointing out all the perceived shortcomings of the Muslims. They also like to brag about their ability to understand and practice Islam solo with no concern for the proper and correct understanding. When a child is told to do something that he doesn’t want to do, he will often ask, “Why?” In most cases the question is not prompted by a spirit of cooperative inquiry, it is prompted by a spirit of rebellion and this is what I see in many of these disgruntled Muslims that are looking for some way to reform Islam to Hislam. Islam is a complete way of life, but they would rather make Islam accept their way of life.

The question is thrown at the parent as a challenge to his or her authority, wisdom, and motive. The child’s question is actually a statement of defiance. It is the same with the disgruntled Muslim. They claim to be Muslim but their words say otherwise and their subtle mocking of Islam and its symbols brings them close to hypocracy.

Yet, in some cases, the child may delight in ‘knowing why’ because he enjoys playing his part in the scheme of things. For Muslims that play these childish games, It would be a good idea for them to learn about Islam and then take their Shahada and come into the fold of Islam correctly, because their trickery fools no one except like-minded fools like themselves. This is why you see them rallying around each other or worse with  straight up disbelievers.

Instead of pretending to be  modern, sophistacted, and intelligent free thinkers – while maligning Islam, why don’t they have the courage to admit their ignorance and lack of understanding (or for some it is wickedness and a sick heart) and  learn about Islam. Other times it is weakness of faith that lead them to attack Islam and Muslims. You will noticed that divourced converts, or converts in bad marriages  (usually married to ‘born Muslims’) rank highest amongst the disgruntled Muslims. Then of course there are the Muslims who simply want to follow their desires and if there desire is not permitted in Islam – then watch out! They will go postal about Islam.

How can  you call yourself a Muslim and yet reject the message of Islam? Why be happy to repeat lies and not take the time in learning the truth? Why do they sound more like disbelievers than Muslims?  Why do they call themselves Muslims in the first place? After all Satan believed in Allah but his pride prevented him from submitting to Allah. Just because one believes that Allah is the only God worthy of worship, doesn’t mean that they are Muslim. Islam is a religion, but not in the western meaning of religion. Islam makes no distinction between the spiritual and the secular in life. Islam is a complete way of life. It is the voluntary surrender to the will of Allah and obedience to His commands. So get it straight – Muslims submit to Allah – NOT the other way around!

Before anyone accuses me of being intolerate to other faiths, rest assure that this is not the case. There is no complulsion in Islam and mankind was created with free choice. Believe what you want to but don’t try to adapt Islam to meet your belief system. You cannot change the meaning and message of Islam and still continue to call it ‘Islam’.
