Yesterday, while browsing through the tag surfer, I ran across a Christian blog that praised Hakeem Olajuwon, for “Getting It”. He starts off by saying,

Hakeem Olajuwon may be a practicing Muslim, but he understands the glory of God better than many evangelicals.

As if practicing Muslims do not understand the Glory of God! It was funny to me that he would even say such a thing, which is why I decided to share with him my little knowledge of Islam, because it is sad not funny that in this day and age a person from among the People of the book, basically the cousins of the Muslims would even entertain such a notion. He continues,

Hakeem said (paraphrased), “When I come to the basketball court, I come to worship God.”

Wow. I can’t tell you the last time I went to work and worshiped God. It’s way to easy to separate God from my everyday life.

I don’t know anything much about him, but, although Hakeem may be a Muslim, when it comes to worship, he gets it.

Of course, I could not let that slide. I let him know that Hakeem is no exception, rather this is from Islam, that all Muslims should make their intentions to do any and everything for the sake of Allah, thus making any and everything an act of worship. He then made a semi retraction of his statement. I will repost the rest of  discussion here, because I am not sure how the Christian blogger (his name is Paul) feels about me carrying on such a long discussion on his blog. If he wishes to continue on his blog then I will oblige, but I did not want to force my views on anyone and will be more than happy to host a discussion along the lines of what we discussed on my  blog. As to what follows:

In that case he only partially gets it,because without faith in Jesus alone, he won’t be saved.

Hey Paul, you aren’t playing fair! He gets it, you can’t retract that…lol! If one must have faith in Jesus ALONE, than how is one to feel towards the one Who Created him?
Allah, says:
” Those whom they supplicate [created beings, such as Prophets, pious men, or angels], desiring means of access to their Lord, as to which of them should be the nearest – they [the Prophets pious men etc.] hope for His Mercy and fear His punishment: Verily, the punishment of their Lord is fearful” (Qur’an 57:17)

In other words even Jesus (peace and blessings be upon him) himself tried to get nearer to Allah by obedience to Him, worshipping Him and carrying out His Commands, hoping for His Mercy; and abstaining from those things which He has prohibited, in fear of His punishment because every true Believer fears and dreads His punishment.

The Christian view is that we can’t please God. There is no good in us.

That’s a very strong view and rather depressing, might I add. Is that really the Christian view. You mean to tell me that all Christians feel that NOBODY …not one single one of God’s creation, can EVER do ANY good in this life and that we are all worthless losers? God revealed in The Quran :
“By time! Surely the human being is at loss. Except for those who have faith and do righteous deeds and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to patience.” [Sûrah al-`Asr]

It is interesting that the Noble Quran offers a complete program with four principles which can make us free from that great loss and gives us salvation.
1.Faith in The One True God, Who is The Creator of all that exist and Lord of all the worlds.
“The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him by his Lord, and so do the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His scriptures, and His Messengers. They say: ‘We do not distinguish between any of his Messengers.’ They say: ‘We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord! To you is our final destination.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 285]

2.Good Deeds

3. The invitation of truth to one another. I invite you to accept Islam for your salvation!

4. Patience, perseverance, and enjoining these on each other.

If the Muslim believers of today would carry out these four principles in their personal and social lives, their problems and difficulties will be solved, their retardation will be amended, their defeats will be changed to victories, and the vice of their wickedness will be removed from them.

We can only worship God in our daily life because He first changed our hearts. We cannot hope to ever be good enough on our own to merit salvation.

That goes without saying. We can’t do anything that God has not willed or decreed. However, we (at least Muslims do, but all should) worship God with hope, love, and fear. We hope that he saves us and guides us, we love Him and aim to do what He loves and avoid what causes His anger. We fear displeasing Him. We do not sit idle waiting for a change of heart. In Islam, no worship is complete without the presence of all three qualities: LOVE of Allah, HOPE in His Mercy and FEAR of His Punishment.

Hakeem and every other muslim may understand that we are to worship God in everything we do, but the motivation is wrong.

The motivation or rather the intention is to please God ALONE by making everything we do for His sake ONLY and to NOT worship any other deity eexcept Him nor set up partners or equals to be worshipped along side Him. How can any God Conscious/fearing person say this is wrong?

We love Him, because He first loved us – not the other way around.

The Believers are stronger in their love for God than the polytheists because the Believers are pure and sincere in their love of God – Alone-while the polytheists divide their love between God and their false gods; and whoever was sincere in loving God -Alone- his love would be stronger than that of the polytheist who divides his love.

Allah says: “O you who believe! If any of you turn back from his faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him – having humility among the believers but mighty in front of those who reject faith, striving in the way of Allah and never fearing the reproaches of those who scoff. This is the grace of Allah which He bestows upon whom He pleases. And Allah encompasses and knows all things.” [Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 54]

” They (Jews and Christians) have taken their rabbis and their monks to be Lords beside Allah, and the Messiah, the son of Maryam (Mary), though they were not commanded but to worship One God: There is none worthy of worship but He, glorified be He: [Far is He] above that which they associate [with Him]” (Qur’an 9:31)

” And amongst mankind are those who take [for worship] others besides Allah, as equals [with Allah]: They love them as they should love Allah. And those who believe love Allah more [than anything else]. If only the wrongdoers could see, behold, they would see the punishment: That to Allah belongs all power, and Allah is Stern in punishment” (Qur’an 2:165)

If you really love God then obey Him. Obedience to other than God, is in contradiction to His Commands and constitutes worshipping FALSE gods. God promises those who associate partners with Him that when they see the punishment which He has prepared especially for them on the Day of Resurrection, they will wish that they had not associated others with Him, either in love, or in anything else. Then they shall know, with certain knowledge that all power belongs to Allah, and that Allah is Stern in enforcing His punishment.

O Lord! Bestow on us the patience and constancy needed for accepting and supporting the Truth.

O Lord! All of us are in loss and it is impossible for us to recompense it save with Your Grace.
